You simply cannot do epic shit before coffee. That’s sort of been my motto since taking the big leap into entrepreneurship a few years ago.
Hello there to you reading this message. I’m Shantel Turner-Collins. Folks close to me call me Shanie, hence the name Shanieism. I’m a spitfire, coffee and wine loving Aries born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. After 20 years in Corporate America and living all my life in Michigan, I quit my job, packed up my shit, and relocated my daughter and I to Washington, DC in 2015.
I seriously had become burnt out from the corporate world and I felt the time was right to pursue my own dreams of entrepreneurship. Prior to leaving the corporate world, I taught myself the ins and outs of graphic design. When I first moved to DC I spent the first 22 months working as a freelance graphic designer. I eventually grew tired of the design life and in October of 2016 I set out to rebrand myself and to venture off into doing stationery and invitation design, but low and behold I came across an illustrator who drew the most beautiful pictures of African-American women and pop art. I struck up a deal with her and the weekend of Black Friday I launched a product line of totes bearing those beautiful images. The rest as they say is “herstory”.
My new business venture is my “boo”. I take pride in the products I offer my customers and for me my customers are really my friends.
There’s more to me beyond all this business shit too. For starters, I love art. I mean, not to the point where I could name some artists, but I have a love of the creative aspect. I love to travel. I still love making handmade greeting cards. In another life, I was probably a chef because I absolutely love to cook. However, nothing quite compares to being a mom. It’s by far my greatest accomplishment in life. I live and breathe motherhood. Quiet as its kept, my daughter is the reason behind my success. She is the motivation that keeps me pushing to reach the top.
